Evoking the Japanese art of origami, the bending planes of the Terra Armchair present a sharply etched silhouette. With a facility for metalwork forged in his early training as a blacksmith, designer Antonino Sciortino successfully marries the chair's tubular metal frame with its back and seat in folded iron for Italian maker Atipico. With an impervious powder-coat finish in a selection of neutral shades, the seating is apropos for both indoor and outdoor placement.
“We stand out for continuous research on materials,” says Gianluca Corbari, co-founder with his brothers Enrico and Maurizio and creative director of Atipico. “But also the traditional ones like wood, iron and ceramics, reinterpreted with a contemporary language. We’re trying to bring out the soul of the materials.”
The upstart Milan-based brand proudly labels its offerings “strictly made in Italy” and works with many designers who seek out the company for its passion for design. Young talents like Federico Angi, Fabio Meliota, Antonino Sciortino, Carlo Trevisani and Zaven “know about historical techniques and Italian productive culture,” says Corbari. “I ask them to find that detail, that extra stroke that makes the difference, but without making a product that is over-designed.”
