There's a mind-bending contradiction at play in French designer Ferréol Babin's concept for the Triplet Shelf. Slender powder-coated steel panels contrast with the thicker Douglas fir shelves. The result is a light but nonetheless substantial freestanding shelf. Or pair it up to suit custom storage needs. From Umbra Shift, dedicated to seeking out new ways with everyday necessities.
It’s not very often that a global enterprise takes the opportunity to revisit its early days but, with Umbra Shift, a household name is doing just that. Conceived as a brand extension of Toronto-based Umbra, a design leader in home products for more than 30 years, the offshoot line harkens back to the company’s original creative impetus with a diverse assortment of freshly minted home goods. The brainchild of Umbra’s design director Matt Carr, the collection draws on the talents of both emerging and established designers—Harry Allen, Hlynur Atlason, Fugitive Glue, Albert Lee, Paul Loebach, Philippe Malouin, MSDS, Lukas Peet and the Umbra Studio—for its selection of carefully crafted furnishings and objects. As Matt puts it, “These are all things we actually want to take home.”
