A study in elegance, La Pipe traces its distinctively curved lines to the silhouette of old-school tobacco pipes. Yet this chair is decidedly contemporary in the hands of designer Ida Linea Hildebrand, with the undulating upholstered seat positioned on attenuated metal legs—available colored in polished gold or matte black. Upholstered in luxuriously soft leather or a selection of superlative woven fabrics, La Pipe brings an out-of-the ordinary flourish to any dining setting. Made by the Copenhagen studio Friends & Founders.

“Our designs are characterized by Scandinavian heritage in terms of the ambitiously high quality level,” says Ida Linea Hildebrand, “and the common idea of surrounding oneself with less, but important things” Creative director of Copenhagen-based Friends & Founders, Ida and husband Rasmus started the design house in just 2013 and have already attracted an enthusiastic following for their collection’s pared-down simplicity —often achieved with unexpected and unusually luxurious materials.  Many of their spare and boundary-breaking pieces easily span several contexts from indoors to outdoors, from work to home environments.

Favoring the trend to a universal aesthetic, the company utilizes local manufacturers and specializes in perfectly detailed and custom-made processes as well as a strong focus on sustainable manufacturing methods. Ida sees her furniture as a vehicle for the client’s personal expression, with bold lines and daring use of materials. With a range that includes upholstered pieces, metalwork and stone, in the hands of Friends & Founders the dictum “less is more” is realized with an persuasively idiosyncratic twist.

“I had no furniture design experience as such,” says Swedish-born rising star Ida Linea Hildebrand. But a mere few years ago, she returned home from work and told her husband that she resigned from her job as an interior designer. Dane Rasmus Hildebrand took the leap of faith with her and together they started Copenhagen-based Friends & Founders. Both studio and brand, the aesthetic is quietly minimal but with a rich use of materials dictated by Ida’s uniquely personal vision. As she says, “Surrounding yourself with original things that mean something to you creates authentic atmospheres.”

Friends & Founders has a strong focus on sustainability, with its European network of local manufacturers and belief in the Scandinavian reductionist tradition of less is more. And Ida is equally committed to innovation as she sees it: “I am unwilling to compromise when it comes to design and the realization of ideas. Playing with strong silhouettes has become an imporatant element in my work.”
