Drop—and cover. What’s shaking at Plumen? Its Drop Top (A) Pendant Light features a mouth-blown glass shade, veiling the sculptural Plumen 001 bulb with a transparent tint. Child’s play, really, the shade simply ‘sits’ on top of the Drop Cap Pendant. While softening the brightness from side view, the surfaces below are fully illuminated. Shade, pendant and bulb combine to admirably striking effect.
“Reducing our energy consumption should feel like a positive, life enhancing choice, not a compromise,” says Hulger co-founder Nicolas Roope. With partner Michael-George Hemus in the London-based studio and input from third designer Samuel Wilkinson, the first stylish eco-friendly bulb—the Plumen 001—became a reality. Its kinetic sculptural form was meant to be seen, not hidden from view like yesteryear’s low-energy lighting. Hulger followed up on the award-winning original with the Plumen 002, as well as accompanying pendant fixtures and shades. Though the 001 resides in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Collection, Nicolas is just as excited about the lightbulbs being widely accessible: “I love thinking about containers stacked full of beautifully packaged Plumens getting lifted on to freighters in Shanghai and lifting off in Southampton, Los Angeles or Melbourne.”
