Here’s a new leaf to be excited about turning…on! A witty paring-down of nature animates the Leaf Floor Lamp, from the Danish furnishings masters at Muuto. The Swedish design team of Mats Broberg and Johan Ridderstråle has conceived a light and elegant silhouette with an energy-efficient LED technology that allows the rotating leaf-like shape to be turned to shine light in any direction. “Though the design is minimalistic and straightforward, a soft asymmetric geometry gives the lamp an organic and friendly appearance,” the duo has commented. As graphic a statement as a line drawing, the Leaf Floor Lamp is available in a range of colors: black, grey, white, rose or leafy green, naturally
”We give the designers the freedom to create new designs,” says Muuto co-founder Peter Bonnén. Inspired by the Finnish word “muutos” that alludes to having a new perspective, the company aspires to update Scandinavian tradition for a new generation. By giving free reign to the brightest design talent in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, there’s the breathing room to conjure a new take on a chair, vase or a lamp, Peter says. “The road to success for modern Scandinavian design lies in a strong belief in the best designers of our time.”
Peter and co-founder Kristian Byrge, who originally trained in economics and management respectively, might not have seemed destined to helm a new-influencer design firm. But their passion for all things design and and the distinctive style they dub “New Nordic” has brought global acclaim in just a few short years. “This gives the Muuto designs great diversity and character and further links them to the Nordic heritage—a heritage Muuto is proud of and that all the designers carry with them as part of their professional luggage”, says Kristian.
BROBERG & RIDDERSTRÅL
These “creative collaborators” open a window on their line of thinking while explaining the Tati series for Swedish maker Asplund: “We decided to mix warm and cold material … and the simple expression led to a strict form with a feminine touch.” Designers Johan Ridderstråle and Mats Broberg have been collaborating ever since meeting as students at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design almost 10 years ago. Headquartered in Stockholm, their studio mixes an architectural practice with furnishings design. They often draw inspiration from everyday life and filter their work through a lens of rational thinking and a good bit of wit.
Tati, named for the French cinema icon of Mr Hulot’s Holiday, proves Broberg & Ridderstråle doesn’t take itself too seriously (though the design racked up serious recognition as Furniture of the Year when introduced.) Perhaps they share an worldview with the auteur they celebrate: “You should always be open to new ideas, impressions and inspiration, because you never know when you are going to find them.”
