Heading up his family’s business in telescopes and other optics for exploring the skies, Fabio Palchetti and his wife Cristina Cencetti established Palomar, an offshoot brand based in Florence and dedicated to inventive mapmaking to mark the journeys of contemporary globetrotters.
A nod to writer Italo Calvino’s novel “Mr. Palomar” as well as the name of one of the world’s largest astronomical observatories, Palomar debuted with the much-acclaimed Crumpled Map series that’s virtually indestructible, weighs next to nothing and can be crumpled on-the-go to stash in a pocket or bag. Similarly, the graphic follow-up Pin Wall Maps let travelers create a personal visual diary plotting out their journeys, be they memories of trips past or imagined for someday in the future.
Like all travelers, Emanuele Pizzolorusso just wanted to get his bearings. So when the Italian-born designer founded his Helsinki studio in 2011, one of his first attention-getting projects turned out to be, not surprisingly, his Crumpled City Map series. Here was the result of his quite literal search for directions—a group of pliable urban guides that tourists could easily stuff into a pocket or pouch. Now he and everyone else could find their way, liberated from the arcane and often-frustrating fold-ups of conventional paper maps.
Similarly freewheeling designs mark Emanuele’s continued inventive work for an international roster of clients, all aimed at the emerging generation and its nomadic, urban and digital lifestyles. He has been widely featured in magazines, such as Monocle, Elle Decor, Wallpaper, Vogue, the New York Times and Wired, and he has received 2 Design Plus Awards in Frankfurt and Maison & Objet’s Prix Les Decouvertes, among other honors.
